Photography Question

Patricia A. Kuniega

Request for Things category

I'd like to request that the contest add an additional general category for "things." It was called still life on another thread, and this term is appropriate as the dictionary defines still life as a representation of inanimate objects.

Today I was about to post my basket of potatoes and was at a loss as to which category to put it! Where does one put potatoes? In the oven for sure, but not in this case! Okay, they do grow on a farm outdoors, but they don't seem to fit in the group with the
Landscapes. I've never seen veggies in there unless they are still growing in the field. These potatoes haven't
grown eyes yet, so I wouldn't place them in with Animals. It's not a
basket of Mr. Potato Heads... so People doesn't work. They're not
really a true closeup or detail. They weren't drastically altered. I had nowhere left to put them but in Elements of Design, which in my opinion is a stretch. I was a design major and know what graphic elements of design are. This term cannot be applied to every "thing" or "object" photo.

I suppose when thinking of categories... you think of... people... places... and THINGS! We
need the THINGS category BAD.

I think there should eb some sort of catagory for shots that don't fit into the other catagories. Yours is a good example. Wouldn't it qualify as a Still Life (if that catagory existed)? Or perhaps we need a general/miscellaneous?

Had a "general" category. People complained. They changed. The people were happy. Now...

I agree Pat, I think still life would be a great catagory. I'm not sure how much the special effect is being used, maybe that one could go. Or just go back to the general catagory where it could be a mish mash of everything. I had a photo last month that I didn't know where to put it...so I just didn't submit it.

Gotta say I agree. Not that there should be a "potato" category - but definitely a more generic still life or other or general or something! I'm not sure why anyone would complain about a general category... That's where you put things when they don't fit somewhere else.

Well, I'm pretty out of touch, thus I missed the complaining. And I'm clearly not in among "the people", because I was disappointed when "general" was dropped. That said, it seems to me that there are a couple of choices:

1) Lots of categories covering a vast array of potential subjects. Which is quite unworkable. I pity the judges already.

2) Lots of wondering about which category is the "least wrong" for a specific photo. Which is certainly not "user-friendly", at least to those of us not among "the people".

3) A General or Miscellaneous category for those shots that don't fit well into the existing categories. But maybe this offends the "purists"....

I agree. Some photos just don't fit the present catagories.

This is not complaining. this is making a suggestion to improve a site we all love.

I don't beleive I ever heard anyone complain about the General category either. It was a good "catch all" and I'm sure many of us used it when we couldn't figure out where to put things. I know I did, although not very often. It seems a better choice than still life for the reason that there are probably things that wouldn't fit still life either, and they could all go in general.

I had to comment on this... I was just about ROFLing when I got to the end.

I completely agree, Pat! (and I absolutely love your humorous description of categorizing your potatoes!) Maybe a little humor will get someone's attention at bp. I know there have already been several questions, emails, and discussions on this topic....but it IS a problem since the new categories were named. I find myself adding filters to still life images (even though I would prefer to leave them as is) just so I can place them in the digital darkroom category! Like you, Pat, I've had some stills that just don't fit anywhere - so I entered them on other sites!

I think it's a GOOD thing when members make suggestions to improve the site. When it takes longer to figure out where to post an image than it did to create it......that's a little bit of a problem (that could be easily solved!)
