lense cap won't close 'system error'

Reliable Nikon E775 suddenly doesn't work. Battery OK. Memory cards OK. When I turn it on it insists 'System Error'. And won't close lense cap.

  Hi PJ.
I had exactly this problem with a friends 775. I surmised that the lens mechanism was jammed, and, since it was out of warranty decided that surgery was in order.
Assuming you are out of warranty and have steady hands you can try the following.
This camera comes apart fairly easily, there are a lot of TINY screws to remove, make sure you get them all (look in the battery compartment). Once it's in bits wiggle anything mechanical GENTLY, you may feel a little click. Put it back together (don't put all the screws in) and insert batteries, power on, if you are lucky it will start up just fine. Put the rest of the screws in.
The 775 has been fine since (6 months) so I think this may have been a one-off for heaven only knows what reason.
Of course YMMV :-)

Let us know how you get on.
DC

I've had exactly the same problem with my company owned 775. A year ago this problem solved by itself with just removing the battery and the memory card for few hours or so. After re-inserting the battery and memory card and powering the unit on/off once, the lens cap closed. After that it has worked over a year until yeasterday.

Yesterday this 775 did it again. This time it didn't solve by itself for just waiting few hours. The USB connector worked properly altough there was this "system error" on camera display, so I was able to retrieve the photos from the memory card. This morning I decided to give it one last try before throwing the camera in a wastebasket. The lens was still "open", I inserted the battery and memcard and powered it on: no system error. Again the problem fixed without actually doing anything, just waiting. I'm not saying waiting is the real medicine for this system error desease, but I didn't open the camere nor did I knock or twist the lens assembly.

Yes, sometimes it's hopelessly slow between shots, but it has been a reliable small camera with decent picture quality - except this frustrating "system error" problem.
