Aerial Considerations

When buying a digital camera specifically for aerial photography, what mega pixles should one look for? Its expected that people would want these images enlarged, how large could these images be enlarged to based on the mega pixles? Looking into starting an aerial photo business. Have the flying credentials, just need a camera and spome pointers perhaps. Thanks!

Now days, 5 and 6 mega pixel cameras are not to expensive. That will give you the ability to print 16x20 or so. As for the AC, it really helps if you can take the door off. Jump planes like C-182 with a jump door work great if you have one pilot and one photographer. If you are flying and shooting, like I say, you really need to take the door off.

Is there a chart I can look at that will tell me how much an image can be enlarged per mega pixle?

Thanks

I don't know of one. There are so many considerations, are you saving as RAW or TIFF in camera, or are you applying JEPG compression? When it comes to the output, there is certain to be some re-sampling, so the interpolation method comes into play. As with a film print, "average print viewing distance" comes into play.

If you want a ball-park average, I would say you need to capture 100 pix per final inch of output size, like I say, it will be up-sampled for printing.

Maybe someone else has some opinions here?
