Monthly Theme Suggestion

I think that having Wildlife as a monthly theme every so often would be good. I know we have the animal category for wildlife pictures, but there are a lot of zoo and pet pictures in there as well, and it's one of the most used categories. I don't mind entering shots in the animal category most of the time, but I'd like to occasionally have the chance to be judged against other shots that have been taken of wild animals in the field. I know there are other sites where I can do this, but none are like BetterPhoto, which I love.

I definitely don't think this warrants a separate category, but would like to see it as a monthly theme once or twice a year.

  Hi Pam!
As someone who lives in a city, but loves to do animal shots - not sure what I could do with a wildlife category... Would the bluebird I saw in the country count? If not I'm stuck taking pictures at the Biodome or Ecomuseum, which I think are quite acceptable - seeing they are all animals... I'm sure catching things in the wild is quite more challenging and rewarding. But I don't get those opportunities. I like the monthly themes that are generic categories that people have to think about (change, blue, humour)... But that's just me.
Keep up the great work!

Bluebirds, birds at the feeder, insects, etc. would count for sure.... If Ecomusuem or Biodome are naturalistic, I figure they'd probably count as well. I was just thinking of something to distiguish between captive or controlled situations and situations where the animals could run away if they decided that they didn't like what you were doing....

I like the generic categories as well. I think they've been doing an excellent job choosing them so far. (I really liked having a humor cateogory.... it was worth quite a few laughs per day for a month.) I can see why a wildlife category might not go down well since there's already a place to put those shots. Just an idea.

Thanks, Diane, for your input!

Pam

  Hi Pam,
I realize it's been some time since you posted this but I just ran acrossed it and would like to add a comment. I personally think that a wildlife category occassionally or even ongoing would be terrific. I don't have an opportunity to shoot wildlife and generally enter zoo animal images - so it wouldn't really affect me at all...but I am always amazed after the judging takes place that SO MANY fantastic WILDLIFE images that I have admired throughout the month have been overlooked in the judging in favor of cats and dogs and "cute" domestic animal shots. I know of a few serious wildlife photographers who have given up on this site and no longer contribute here. I think that is such a shame as those incredible images are such a challenge to produce and the lack of acknowledgement and reward has caused so much frustration and disappointment in this contest. The judges at bp seem to be somewhat biased toward pet photos and that is their right ....but still a shame. So, I think it's a good idea.

I would love a "Wildlife" theme for one month! I am lucky enough to get wildlife where I am, and I think it would be fun to enter against other wildlife shots, instead of against cats and dogs, just once! I also take an abundant amount of cat/dog pics, which I love doing, but I think a Wildlife theme would be fun!

I agree with you all. It is much more of a challenge to take an exceptional photo of an animal in the wild than in your living room and they do seem to get overlooked on BP. Great idea. I hope it gets noticed.
