Portrait Photography

If I would like to pursue starting a portrait photography buisness, do I need an expensive camera like the Hasselblad or can I use my 35mm and get just as good results that my costumers will be happy with?

  Hi Lesley -
If you are truly serious about shooting portraits, a medium format camera will give you more professional quality than 35mm. The reason for this is due to the larger negative size. I've used Mamiya 645´s for years and have had great results, or there are other choices out there much less expensive than a Hasselblad. I would also recommend purchasing and learning to use a vignette system, which not only acts as a lens shade, but offers a variety of fantastic effects that enhance your portraits & excite your clients. A #1 and #2 soft focus filter are also great for softening blemishes and added enhancement for females. One way you might consider getting started in portrait photography is to apply at a local school photography company. They often have a high turnover of photographers...I should know, that's how I started. Good luck!
