Which digital camera do I buy?

I am looking into purchasing a new digital camera, but I am not professional or anything. I just want something that 1) I can afford and 2) that will let me take good pictures and 3) allow me to get creative. Again, I am just an amateur. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

  Hi Stephanie,
My basic suggestions:
* Get at least a 3 megapixel
* Know what you are planning to take pictures of and look for the features you will need (i.e. I wanted to take good action pictures, so I needed the 10x zoom and a fast burst mode but also wanted to take macros and have a video option)
* I have a Fuji S5000 and love it
* Keep in mind that on top of the cost of the camera, you will need a bigger memory card and spare batteries, also possibly a camera case - so figure at least another $100 or more
* Once you have your camera, you will need to decide how you are going to get prints from the pictures. Many places nearby allow you to bring a cd in and get prints (i.e. Walmart, Loblaws, etc.) There are also many on-line places, or you may want to have your own printer at home (factor in the cost of a decent printer, ink and paper). I personally send my photos out on-line - I prefer getting real photos back (just like from my film shots).
* Once you've narrowed down your choices to a couple, take yourself to a store and try them out (hold them, take a sample picture, do the buttons seem in the right place? etc.) Most salespersons at larger non-photography stores are not experts - so do all your homework before going.

  go to Steve's digicams.com and check out the Minolta Dimage Z2. $ 350.00 or so and does everything you will want. 4.0 mp 38-380mm optical zoom. One of the very best built in flashes too at 39 guide no.
