Photography Question

Babu M. Islam

How can I get the picture background 100% white?

While taking a still picture form Canon Powershot Pro1 (Digital
camera), with white backgroud (using White cloth and white Paper under florescent light) and color
object.
The backgroud become 10% to 40% grey in color rather than white. It
should be 100% white.
Question:How can I resolve this problem?

I've never used a Canon Powershot Pro1. Although, I've considered buying it, sight unseen, for traveling.

When I wanted to photograph a seed pod against a white background, I used a white sheet of paper (white foam core is stark white and would also work). And I used the Canon 420EX flash, with my Canon Elan 7E SLR film camera.

It's my understanding that if you slightly overexpose, and use a stark white background, AND use daylight or simulated daylight lighting (in my case, the 420 EX flash attachment), you would produce a light background.

Are you correcting the white balance for the fluorescent lighting?

A sheet produces shades of gray in folds or creases where shadow is created. White foam core bounces light, but creates no shadow. Try that, if it's available to you.

Good luck.

You can correct it after the fact in a program (I used Photoshop Elements 3.0). There is a free trial at www.adobe.com.
Click on Enhance, Adust Color - and Remove Color Cast

Try and overexposure your shots by 2 stops. This might help.

HI. Cameras look for 18% gray in order to get a proper reading, so if your camera is viewing a lot of white and no or little black, it'll expose that white until it "hits" an 18% gray. Consider getting an 18% gray card from a photo store (or print a block of 18% gray from your inkjet) and set the exposure to that, then take the photo.
