Purchasing Lens question

I have a digital rebel, and I'm heading back to Daytona in febuary for the 500. The only lens I have right now is the one that came with the camera. I'm going to be in row 38 of 40..

I was thinking of getting one of the 75-300mm IS lenses, not just for daytona, but as a general zoom lens. I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on wether this would be a good second lens to get.

Right now, I mainly use the camera for pictures when I'm fishing, and taking pictures in cemetaries of old headstones from the late 1700's and early 1800's.

Would this lens bet worth it, since I don't beleive i'll be able to bring a monopod into the daytona because of the security policies, and would it be good second lens for some all around shooting?

  kris,
i have a 70-300 lens [tamron] which I use a lot. it's not a fast lense, but for the price, you can't beat it.
hand holding at 300 is tricky, but can be done, squeeze the shutter, don't click.and be steady.
the zoom range will save you a lot of steps, hth.

I was also recently debating maybe getting the non IS version of the lens, to see how it works. If I can do it without shake. Or just to get used to it, for practice, then maybe in january or febuary get the IS version and just sell the non IS one or keep it as a tripod use lens. I have also thoght about getting a non canon lens. Maybe Tamron or Sigma.
