light metering

Hi All
How can one use the automatic mode of a camera to function somewhat like a light meter. I have read at many places but it’s not very clear somehow to me. I have Canon EOS Rebel K2.
thanks
manish

Set the camera to spot-meter mode and attach the longest lens you have (up to 1000mm). Then point at the area you want to meter and read off the camera settings that the camera determines. Don't forget that this is take a "reflective" measurement so you will need to compensate depending on the reflective properties of what you are metering. Over-expose for white objects and under-expose for dark objects.
