Could you explain how to use an 18% gray card?

By convention, all camera's meters are calibrated to 18% gray, as a mid-tone. Thus, if you were to shoot a bright, snow scene, the camera thinks it see 18% gray [reflected light level] and you wind up with an underexposed picture. In snow or at the beach, you should open up 1-2 stops.

The gray card can be used to set the appropriate exposure. Metering on the card lets the camera's meter identify the correct exposure without the influence of the snow [in the example above.] You don't need the full 8X10 card; you can cut these into smaller sizes that fit better in your gadget bag.

Another way to use the gray card is to include it in your picture for metering purposes. Focus on the card and note the exosure identified. Then remove the card and shoot at the setting noted.
