Photography Question

Jackie Pyper

Lunar photography

I am a very very beginner photographer. I just recently started this past month taking an interest in photography. I love the subjects of my pics so far. But my passion is taking night photos with the moon in it. I tried with my little camera and failed miserably. Can someone tell me what kind of film camera and lens I will need to achieve these pics please?

The moon is a relatively small but very bright object in a black sky. This causes most camera meters to badly overexpose the moon.

Start with a variation of the "sunny 16" rule, "moony 11". For full moon, set the aperture to f/11 and the shutter speed to 1/film ISO (eg. if using ISO 200 film, set shutter speed to 1/180, 1/200, or 1/250). If you have a digital camera that is limited to just f/8, then set f/8 and 1/2xISO.

Doing a search on "lunar photography" or "photograph the moon" I found this site helpful: http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/howtophoto/index.htm.
