Photography Question

Brian McDonald

Which filter should I get

I am looking to purchase a UV filter for my DSC-F717 so that I can leave it on all the time to protect the lens. I have heard that Hoya makes the best. I have looked at Hoya's filters, and there are so many. HMC's, High quality, standard, UV(O), UV(N) and just plain UV. Is one of these better than the other? What do the letters in the parentheses mean? Will a cheaper $2.00 UV filter from ebay work just as well? Thanks in advance for the help.

I've not seen "UV(N)", but there are differnt UV filters that begin cutting UV at different wavelengths. The differences may be important if you are doing scientific work, but not for general photography, or if your intent is simply a protection filter. I don't think there is a significant difference between UV(0) and UV.

I would not get a cheapie. The cheapie most certainly is not multicoated, so would contribute to flare. It may or may not use good optical glass. It may also have a plastic ring, which is not as desireable as brass or alloy which hold their shape better and are less likely to get stuck on the lens.

I have a Hoya UV(0) filter that I keep on my camera at all times. I think it ran about 28 bucks or so for my lens size-- but its a small investment for the protection I get from it! :)

Thanks for the answers. Much appreciated.

Shauna, do you have the standard, high quality, or HMC? Thanks.
