Photos Where the Person Looks Superimposed

I am presently using a Minolta Freedom Explorer 75w. Whenever I use my flash to take a picture in dim lighting, the person looks superimposed onto the background (the subject looks unnaturally brighter than the background). Otherwise, the flash is so bright (even at night) that the features on the face cannot be seen. Is this a problem with the flash?

  Pei Chin,

I'm not sure what kind of Camera you have, but with compacts it can be very difficult to get "natural" looking photos when you have unnatural light.

Try this: Back you subject away from the flash a bit. Give at least 2 metres to prevent the washed out effect. (Too far will make the flash useless.)

Then, make sure you are using a tripod, and and have the subject sit very still until after you have given them the okay.

Take the photo, but keep the shutter open after the flash has gone off for a few more seconds. Make sure that neither the camera or the subject moves until after the shutter is closed again.

This will (hopefully) expose the back ground better without ruining your subject. Let me know how it goes.
