Photography Question

Trouble with digital in the studio.

Hi All,
I am working in a studio with glass awards for etching. I shoot the awards for the brochures and catalogs. When I started here, the equipment was limited, so I use a 35mm digital with a light table and softboxes for lighting. The problem is, my shots have a gray cast over the entire image. The white light table always turns out gray (or flat). I work in manual mode and adjust the shutter to overexpose and it still comes out gray. I have also tried adjusting WB and EV to get the correct exposure. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get a good exposure or is this something that happens with lower end digitals? Thank you for any help.

You might want to consider that the problem is scatter and stray light from the light table. What kind of lens hood are you using? Have you masked off the area right in front of your lens with black card board. Additionally, do you have gobos between your lights and lens so you are not picking up any stray light from them. Finally, are you shooting in a completely dark room.
Hope these ideas help.
Good Shooting
Doug
