Proper use of filters

I was reading about the use of a polarizing filter, and it said it is primarily used for landscape. They also refered to rotating/or setting the filter to control darkness. Can you please explain this?
I subscribe to the notion of having a filter to protect my lens, but if you are not meant to use a polorizing filter for most shots, what should I use to protect my lens?

Hey there- I use a UV Haze filter on my camera. I don't know what kind of lens you have, but my filter specifically is a Hoya 58mm Haze UV 0 (zero). It's very commonly used for permanent lens protection.

There is a big difference between polarisizing filter & UV filter.uv filter is saveing u r camera lens from ultra rays.this also protact u r camera lens from dust, water and finger prints.Poloarizing filter cut the glare of lights .most of the photographer use this filter for land scape photography.because this is use ful to make sky blue which always look good in lanscape photography.
