slr terminology I keep hearing slr (single lens reflex) term usedwith film cameras, I was under the impression some digitals are also. I know my Dimage Z2 is ttl, but isnt it considered a slr as well?

The "reflex" in SLR refers to a mirror that routes the light from the lens to an optical viewfinder, so one views directly through the taking lens. With "SLR-type" cameras like the Dimage Z2, there is no mirror reflecting the image to an optical viewfinder. The viewfinder is a tiny electronic screen projecting the image recorded by the digital sensor.

yes I know about the swinging mirror on a true slr, but I guess I can assume my digital is an slr type since it does see ttl even though its an electronic image. Thanks

Sorry to say it needs the mirror to be an SLR on a digital camera as well. It can still be TTL metering but not SLR without the mirror. There are higher end Digital SLR such as Canon Rebel, Nikon D70, Canon D20, etc.

Seems its like going to five mechanics, you get five opinions. All im interested in is how it sees, which is through the lens versus separate viewfinder.

In that case, yes, it is a single lens camera and you view through the "taking lens" without paralax error. Same for a View Camera, but neither is an SLR. View Cameras and SLRs are also distinguished by the fact that they have interchangeable lens systems, where the digital SLR-type cameras and film ZLRs (Zoom Lens Reflex) have a permanent fixed lens.

ok you got the last word. It is not an slr camera. If I need one where the viewfinder is crucial in that regard, Ill use my Konica fs-1 which has a nice big shiny mirror that you can feel the ground shake when it flips up.

I don't know why you seem to take this personal. You simply asked if your Dimage Z2 is an SLR and you received the correct answer, no it isn't. Yes, SLRs have a loud, vibration inducing flapping mirror. Your SLR-type camera doesn't have that, so that's a plus. SLRs have both advantages and disadvantages over your camera. No one said you had to have an SLR.

I guess because you seem to want to impress me with your terminology. I already gave you the last word. The question had only one answer, and you gave it. Enough.
