Photography Question

Chris Boubalos

Getting comments and advice

Hi all,
complex question here.

Facts:
1. I'm a beginner
2. I'm not a native english speaker
3. I'm impatient :)
4. I'm new to this site and have never been in touch with other photographers.
5. The main reason i'm in here is that I have realised that advice and comments are excelent in getting better.

Actual question:
Well, while a comment like:
"very good" and the like, is helpfull and encouraging, I would like your opinion on how to "attract" suggestions like: "ok, but u could/should do that editing or frame like this or.. and in general attract whatever a teacher would say to the student.

I thought that commenting on others might help, but I cant even evaluate or criticize my own photos :).

I also thought that creating an excelent member gallery that attracts discution all by itself would be ideal, but advice is mostly needed way before that point.

I apologise for the length of this text.
Thank you.

evaluating your own stuff is what everyone should do at least.

  Hi Chris,
Welcome to BetterPhoto! You've found the very best site on the web for photographers. To attract constructive criticism on your images, you could put a note in the description box asking for it. Best of luck to you. :)

  Thank you all,
Gregory, although it seems natural that one should evaluate before displaying, that would require that he has developed an eye for photographs which I haven't. I have actualy realised that if my photo looks good thats out of luck or anyway out of something that I don't consiously control. But yes, I see your point, evaluating my own stuff should be my 1st target.

  Hi Chris!
Welcome to BP! As Kathleen so well put it - this is a fantastic site! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
Definitely put in your description that you want feedback/suggestions/constructive criticism.
Also, as you browse through other people's shots and read comments made on them, seek out those who do make constructive suggestions, and try contacting them and asking for feedback on your work.
Good luck! I'm off to check out your gallery now!
Keep in touch!
D.

I looked at your gallery and you're posting some great pictures. Obviously you are evaluating your work, even if you don't know how. Don't expect a lot of actual critisism here. Most people here just don't have the stomach for it. A lot are people in exactly your situation (me included). If you want to know something specific post your picture in Q&A and ask specific questions. Read advice in the Q&A section on pics that others post. You'll learn a lot more that way than just posting your pictures. That's how I've learned the most and it's helped tremendously.

I once asked how to take a picture of water with a sense of motion without blowing out the hightlights. I posted an example. I got SO many helpful answers that I now feel confident I could do that type of photography okay.

That's my advice to you!

Good luck!

Karma

Gregory. I checked out your gallery and your well on your way to developing your photographic eye. Keep taking risks and before you know it you'll see a pattern and know what you're doing.
