Repairing My Nikon N-75

I own a Nikon N-75, about 14 months old.
Treated it like a baby. One day a roll of film I just shot would not rewind; additionally, the camera would not load film. The Nikon repair center said the film transport mechanism is broken:gave an estimate to have it fixed for 144.00

Luckily, I purchased the camera with an extended warantee from B&H photo, and I could have it repaired free by shipping it out to N.J.---I live in New N.Y.

Those are the facts.
I have several questions:

Should not a quality Nikon camera last several, if not many years without breaking?

Is there something about AF cameras, with their bells and whistles that makes them prone to break easier, as opposed to the old manual focus cameras?

Is there a good chance this problem will recur? AND Finally

Should I just go out and buy another camera-- I've been looking at the Nikon N-80.Maybe a second used manual focus camera for back up?
I never use Auto Focus anyway.

Thanks Frank

If you never use AF, get a used manual-focus Nikon body.
You're right about the "bells and whistles",...there's more to worry about with battery life and possible malfunction.

Any suggestions for a good used Nikon Model?

  Frank,
The FM10, FM3A, and FM2N are your best choices in manual-focus, no-frills Nikons. You can read reviews and check spec's at the following links:

I've had a Nikon N80QD for several years now and have not had any problems with it (knock on wood). I too treat it like a baby (isn't that the only way?)...it seems strange to me that your camera would have that problem with it at such a young age. I do not know what the likelihood of this mechanism breaking again is; maybe someone with Nikon can provide more guidance?

In any case, if you do decide to get a new camera, I LOVE my Nikon-- :)

Hope everything works out okay! It certainly would be less expensive to repair than to buy a new one!

  Thanks Shauna!
I have been thinking about the Nikon N80
Read numerous good reviews.
Also like the F100-- should I make the splurge?

How about An N80 AND a Nikon FM3A(one body for back up).

Thanks
Frank
