Photographing Sports ... With a Lens Hood

Should I use a lens hood when photographing a high school soccer game? What would the difference be in using a lens hood and not? The camera I have is a Canon Elan 7e with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM lens. The games are played at night under lights and also during the day.

You don't have to. Unless you see some glare from shooting towards the sun, it's not going to do anything to how the picture looks. Otherwise, if it rains or to protect the front lens are the only things you'd need it for.

Why wouldn't you use the lens hood? If you're concentrating on the action, you probably won't notice if you've caught glare/flare/ghosting from the sun or field lights until it's too late. The hood will also help protect the lens should it get hit by the ball or a player. I, personally, can't think of a reason not to use the lens hood.

because, it depends on where the light is coming from. a night game isn't going to do anything.
If there's flare that a hood will prevent, you'll see it.

I agree with Jon. Even with a night game, there are spot lights that need to be watched as well and if you are so busy concentrating on the game, you will most likely miss watching for glare. It costs nothing to keep it on all the time as I do just to be sure. The only time I don't have it on is if I am shooting under controlled lighting where I know for sure there is no possibility of glare.

Never seen a stadium with lights that low.

I've had that for example when shooting baseball and you follow the ball and of course it would also depend in what lens. It is certainly not always needed but IMPO, it certainly can't hurt to have the extra protection on the lens to begin with.
