Photography Question

How to determine Mb count when saving in JPG?

I am tryimg to uploading 2Mb JPG images to a stock company. Is there a way to determine in advance of the conversion from Tiff files what my megabyte count will be? By keeping the resolution at 300 for the JPG files and reducing the long side to 1800 pixels I get megabyte counts ranging from 1.2 to 2.86. Thanks.

  Hi Anthony.
The simple answer is no!

The size of any compressed file is determined by the amount of detail contained in the image (all other things being equal).

For example, an image with lots of fine detail (trees) will yield a much larger file than a plain blue sky. Try it and see.

Some imaging software predicts how big your file will be so you can tweek the 'quality' setting to get the file size you want (I think photoshop does this).

The sizes you are getting seem reasonable for a long side of 1800 pixels. If any files turn out too big after conversion just do the conversion again with a lower quality, you soon get to know the best settings for 'your' type of pictures.

By the way, adjusting the 'resolution' value will have no effect on the file size.

Hope this is of help.

Cheers
DC
