Photography Question

Angela E. Wright

what's your signal?

Ok, this may seem like a silly question but for all of you experienced photographers, try to remember back when you felt a bit awkward in getting your subjects attention....
when you are getting ready to photograph a person or a group what is your indication that you are about to take that the picture?? Do you say 1, 2, 3.., Smile!, Say cheese(I hope not!) Ready?! OK!? - I am not the type of photographer that wants to make people say dumb things like "fuzzy Pickle" (trust me, I have had that photographer)...People don't want to have their mouths doing strange things in a photo.
So give me your two cents!! What's your signal? Or do you have one? What is the best way you have found to put people at ease with the process with out coming across like you are still trying to figure it out?
THANKS Guys!

A trick I learned long ago from renown photographer and instructor Lefty Krey, might help when photographing individual portrature.

After you get the subject into position, and are ready to take the photo,...say, "OK,...Now, tell me a story!", or..."Tell me something about yourself".
Just be ready to shoot quickly, for all of the natural poses that will ensue.

When you aim the camera, motivate the subject like you're talking to a model, or simply coach your subject during casual photo shoots---the moment you take the photos just make them feel at ease..." OK guys, lets all squeeze for some pics", or better yet use the FLASH ( Built-in or unit ) as a fill-in ( for group photos) and the subjects will AUTOMATICALLY know you've taken the photo.( due to the flash)---the AF-aid light ( to avoid the scary red-eye ) in most cameras are quite useful to grab the subject's attention so don't CANCEL it when utilizing your flash ( Cancel it when its NOT recommended ).
