How to shoot scenes with neon signs

If a scene of a store front contains neon lights, as well as light from inside--at or past sunset; How do you get a correct exposure?Using a 28-80mm zoom.
What if there is a large foreground structure just outside the store?

Thanks
Frank

  Frank,

I would say it depends what you want to be the main subject in your shot? I.e, do you want the large foreground structure to be your centre of attention, or the lit storefront with the neon sign??
If the latter, I would suggest metering with your camera off the neon light itself after or near dark, which of course will try and expose it correctly.
I know it is said very often on here (nevertheless very true), always bracket in tricky situations like that, even if its just + & - 1/2 stop.

Hope this helps, anyone is free to correct me if im wrong :)
