Photography Question

What's wrong with my speedlite 540ez?

Okay, I purchased a used speedlite 540ez from a camera store in town a year ago. They have gone out of business. I used it once and them put it away. I am getting back into photography (digital) adn want to try using the 540 on my canon eos 10D and my 35mm eos elan7. I don't have the manual so I can't check there. (I've requested one from Canon) When I attach it to my 10D, nothing happens, no flash. It turns on the pilot light turns green then red and when I push the pilot button, the flash will go off, but that's it. That's the only time. Please help.

The 540EZ should work flawlessly with the Elan 7. A copy of the manual can be purchased from Canon, but there is an online instruction at http://www.eosdoc.com/manuals.php?q=540EZ That page also mentions the highly recommended link, http://teladesign.com/photo/eos-flash/, which is a very good overview of the EOS flash system(s).

The 540EZ is not compatible with the 10D in any automatic mode. Digital sensors do not reflect light uniformly the way film does, so they cannot meter flash of-the-film TTL the way the film cameras do. Canon's digitals require an E-TTL compatible flash (EX series) that sets exposure using a low-power pre-flash that is measured by the evaluative meter before the mirror flips up. 10D use with an EX flash is explained in Section 7 of the user manual. Alternatively, you can use a non-dedicated non-TTL flash, like the Vivitar 283, with the digitals.

I believe you can use the 540EZ with the 10D in full manual - set the 540 for manual output (M 1/1 for full power, M 1/2 for half, etc.) and the 10D for Av or M, using guidenumber formula to set aperture.

Thank you so much for the information. I'll look into getting that manual and into the (EX) for my 10D. Thanks again!
