Photography Question

Books or websites needed

I am really interested in getting into photography as a fun hobby. I have never done anything with photography. I learned a few things from a site on the internet and I order a catalog for the study at home program from NYI of photography. I was wondering if any one knew any other good websites or books that I could buy to help me get started, as in what equipment to buy or learning how to take good pictures.

  Hi Lisa,
There are many sources of information to promote your "fun hobby".
One of the better ones is this site.
Read the Q&A Forum daily, and view some of the photos and comments posted here for some great tips.

You might also want to get some reading material on the principles of photography.
If you learn the basics of composition, exposure, depth of field, and use of light,...both natural and created,...you will have built a solid foundation from which to grow.
For equipment,...a good SLR (film or digital), with manual-overrides is a must-have.

I can personally recommend John Hedgecoe's "Complete Photograpy Course", or the Kodak series entitled, "Kodak Library of Creative Photography",..(if you can still find it).
Both are packed with a wealth of useful information.

Good luck!

The public library in my town has many good books on photography, including the ones referenced in the answer above. I was also lucky enough to have gotten a very good deal on several series of photography books in their used book sale. They are nice to have on hand. Used book stores may also carry some if you are interested in starting a photography library at a low cost, that is one way to do it. I always have something on hand on photography to read.

In My opinion, as good as books and classes are, the very best way to learn about photography is to get out there and start shooting. Find a subject that you love and have plenty of access to and take 'oodles' of pictures of it. Vary your settings, your times, and your viewpoint, and then look at your images and see which ones you like and don't like, and then go take some more with that knowledge...never leave home without your camera and begin to look at the world in a new way--as if it were a giant photograph, and when you see a little portion of it that you want to capture for yourself, go for it!
