Photography Question

shooting live bands

I was wondering, what is the best way to photograph bands? I attend quite a few concerts in smaller venues that allow cameras and even though the photos are decent, they aren't quite what I'm seeing through the viewfinder.

I'm using a Digital Rebel and using the on-camera flash. The flash is too strong and it gives off a cold feeling in the pictures, sort of a greyish cast.

I know I need a faster lens, but would a
Speedlite 420X or 550EX make a difference? Or even some kind of warming filter?

Don't use the flash. You're losing all the ambience and color provided by the stage lights. Set the WB for tungsten lighting, or daylight if you want a warmer color cast. Shoot in one of the Creative Modes (P, Av, Tv, M) and use the AELock (* thumb button) to invoke the Digital Rebel's Partial Metering. You want to use Partial Metering on a spot-lit performer, otherwise meter reads all the darkness around him/her and gives too much exposure.

See http://www.photo.net/concerts/mirarchi/concer_i for more information on photographing concerts.

Thank you for the advice. I have tried shooting without flash, but the shutter speed is too slow. My images are blurred, sometimes this is kind of neat, but I don't want that effect all the time. Will the AE lock help in regards to this problem? I will give it a shot tonight at a show that I'm attending.

Partial metering should help. Otherwise you'll need to set higher ISO and/or use a wider aperture lens to get higher shutter speeds.
