Photography Question

Grainy photos

I recently took my sisters senior pictures and had noticable grain to the point where the face looked blurry on some. (she didn't notice and thinks they look great but perfection is what I'm looking for) I used my Canon Rebel 2000 (I know- thats one of the problems with 35mm film) and Kodak Portra 160NC. We were in open shade most of the time and I used my Vivitar 550FD for fill flash to take care of the shadows under the eyes. I had the ISO on the camera set to 160 and set at 400 on the flash. Would a diffuser on the flash have helped? A flash bracket? Thanks in advance!

Underexposure could be the culprit. Were there bright areas behind her that fooled your meter? Perhaps you could try rating the film lower, or double check your settings with a light meter. Unless you're making huge enlargements, 35mm film should give you good quality. A diffisuer on the flash would soften the light, but I don't think that would affect graininess. Pushing film could also increase grain, but doesn't sound like you did that. Try having them reprinted?
