Taking Photos for Online Store

I am going to put together an online store and will be shooting photos of each image. My question is... What is the best way to do this? I want all the photos to have the same background and I have heard you should use a backdrop (blanket, sheet) Is this true and if so what color should I use that helps the products stand out best. Keep in mind that I will be going door to door so it needs to be portable. If you have any other advice please pass it on. It would be of great help. Thank you in advance.

I use a white seamless paper backdrop for such purposes. It comes in four foot width roll that is somewhat easy to transport. Small, portable stands are available to hold up the roll. If the paper gets too dinged up too quickly, you could use a white cloth. Your options are numerous; just look for something that looks professional. Image is everything ;^)
