What to use to connect digital camera and lighting

Hello! I am trying to set up a small home studio for friends and family. I am working with a Canon Rebel ti (film) right now and I took the plunge and bought a digital canon rebel 300D on ebay last night. I also just bought a strobe light kit and received that last week (along with a camera flash which I dont think will even fit my new camera). Anyway, my question is...what do I REALLY need to hook up my lighting to my camera. I've been looking through the Q&A and am having information overload!! Do I need a sync cord or something for the hot shoe? Also, I read that because I'll be using digital, I don't need a light meter. Do I or what?!?! If not, do I just take a few pictures...trial and error?
I'll take any info you all have on this subject, or anything else you think I may need for my new camera and little home set up! Thanks SO MUCH!!

need a sync cord and a sync outlet adaptor that fits in the hot shoe, cause I don't think the rebel 300D has an outlet built into the camera. If it does, then you don't need the adapter.
Those that said you don't need a light meter meant they used the monitor to judge exposure. Trouble with that is that many people who complained about it looked okay on the monitor but was too dark on their computer didn't realize that the camera monitor had a lot of lee-way for images that were towards the dark side on exposure could still look okay.

Thanks Gregory! I'll have to either wait to see my new camera, or look up the info to see if it does have the outlet.
Thanks again for your answer!

  Tracey,
I second Gregory's suggestion about a flash meter. It's an indispensible tool when working with studio lights.

A local friend of mine running digital has been doing without and just asked me about flash meter recommendations. Reason? Exactly what Gregory described. He has to test his lighting setup by downloading his test shots to a computer screen as his display on the back of his camera cannot be trusted for tweaking the lighting/exposure. The time required to do this has become a burr under his saddle!

Thank you John! I really appreciate you both responding. I will figure this stuff out slowly, but surely! This is a great website, and I have learned so much by reading all the Q&A from helpful people like yourselves!
Thanks
Tracey
