Novice Lighting Questions

Fabulous site! Thanks. I'm still exploring it. I've owned an Olympus 2000Z for a year now and just recently decided it was time to learn to use it off auto-mode. I just purchased the Short Course book and have already learned a lot.

I'm a graphic designer. Sometimes my clients (who can't afford a professional photographer) need me to shoot products. Mostly it's close-ups (not macro really, but 3-8" bottles, boxes, etc from about 1-1.5 ft away). I'm trying to learn about lighting, backdrops and soft boxes, etc. When I've shot products in the past I've tried to use natural light or use the on-board flash which of course was harsh and cast strong shadows. I have an external flash which I've only recently even tried to plug into the camera. When I used to use it on my old SLR I would set the speed to 1/60 and then read the chart on the flash for the f-stop based on distance. I understand that I can choose S or A priority and set either the shutter speed or f-stop. But it seems if I choose one to set then the camera chooses the other. I don't know if I choose the f-stop if it'll work correctly if the speed isn't set to the standard 1/60. Does the camera automatically select that speed correctly? I'm trying to understand how best to use this external flash (what settings, with or w/o the on-board flash, etc).

In addition to helping me with the above, can you recommend any books or other websites that particularly address inexpensive lighting options for novices? I can't afford a whole studio setup but want to be more sophisticated then I've been for the last year, using the camera on auto mode for everything! I'm willing to spend some money and/or make whatever I need for shooting these products. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Just thought I'd let you know I posted this same question to rec.photo.digital newsgroup and got two extremely informative links (below). I feel like my questions are answered. Thanks.
