Photography Question

Bethann P. Caporaletti

What color to paint a studio?

I am setting up a studio for head and shoulders and full length shots. I need to know what is the best color to paint a studio. From the little research I have done, I have found that painting the ceiling black and the walls a neutral grey will keep light from bouncing around too much. But I am a photojournalist, not a very good studio photographer and I am suppose to set up this studio... HELP!!

  I have heard that having dark walls and a dark ceeling can make a studio a very depressing place to be. I heard it should be bright or neautral to keep the energy flowing.....

  Hi Bethann;

well; it may look depressing, but most pro studios are quite dark. Black walls prevail.
Studio photography demands we control the light and put it where we want it.
Light colored walls or even white give unpredictable results; unless of course you are shooting the same shot time and time again.
Black has no color cast. So called white paint may not actually be white, so if you insist on going with white, be careful.

With the modeling lights and reflectors that should be used anyway, it should not be all that depressing.

Pete
