what kind of lens to buy for a canon rebel 2000 sl

Please help... I just bought a canon Rebel 2000 flim slr. I need to get a lens. I love to shoot pictures of my 4 cats, some macro shots, pictures of my family and some nature pictures too. I have thought about the canon 50mm f1.4
or the canon 50mm f1.8. Someone please help me I need something to start off with. I can't wait much longer..... thanks.Jan

If I were to choose between the two, I would go with the former. The 50mm 1.4 just has some convenient extra features...a quiet USM motor, it's a little faster & I believe it also has better construction in it's elements. Of course, there's a HUGE price gap between the two, so I don't know if it is worth it to you . The f/1.4 is also heavier than the 1.8, but both are so small it doesn't matter.

However, Canon has an enormous arsenal of lenses to choose from; I recommend a zoom lens so you can frame your pictures more easily & have plenty of freedom. Also, I like to shoot portraits a little farther up into the telephoto range, maybe at 135 or so --I just like the look. So finally, here are my recommendations:

50mm f/1.4 USM
50mm f/1.8 II
100mm f/2 USM
85mm f/1.8 USM
28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM

I'd try to avoid the 28-80 & 28-90. They are extremely inexpensive, but are really unsatisfactory. Hope that helps...

  Hi Steven
Thank you so much for responding so fast to my question, yes this has helped me so much. I bought the camera a month ago and am going crazy no being able to use it. I did not buy the kit lens because I heard it was so bad. Thank you again for your help..Jan

Hi Jan!
I would suggest a 28-105mm lens or 28-200mm zoom to start with!
If your budget is a problem you might want to look at other makes of lenses, such as Tamron,Tokina,Sigma among others!!
Check out www.bhphotovideo.com &
www.keh.com,both offer an extensive used equipment department, which might offer another option!
You might want to consider a 70-300mm lens as you become accustomed to your camera!!
