Star Trails advice

Took about a hour and a half drive out to Joshua Tree NP to capture my first star trails photo. Using a Canon 10D with a 17-40mm lens and my new Manfrotto pod, I was ready to rock and roll. So I set the lens @ 27mm (don't know why) focus set on MF, set the camera at bulb apture @ wide open f4, set my remote @ 1min countdown and set the exposure @ 30min. Camera pointed @ SW skies with some rock formations in the foreground. Great view could see the milkyway very nicely.
At about 9:20pm turned the camera on pressed start on the remote, countdown started and in 1min photo was being shot. After 30min photo was done I checked out the results on the preview window it looked really cool. Then set up for another 30min pointed to the W, when done previewed and was happy.
Then I got home and downloaded photo's to my computer and I was NOT a happy camper. My focus was off for one thing and the noise was just ridiculous! Here is the info for the First shot. If you can help me out I would apperciate it greatly.

One thing I did not do (don't know if it matters) was cover the viewfinder, one other thing In the first shot I had a couple of cars drive by but all that seemed to do was make a light trail. Finaly how do you focus in the dark I was trying to but could not really make out anything. Again thanks for any advice you can offer. Thanks dan
