Digital Cameras

Hi Jim,
I have bought a digital camera and am having a heck of a time printing pictures that are not granulated. I bought the Sony MVC73 which stores pictures on a floppy. Is that one of my problems? Do I need to get one that has a storage chip? Which one would you suggest? I have a few days left to return my other one and I would like your advice. Are there any out there that hold floppies that will give me a better resolution?

Let me know your suggestion.

  Hi Cris,

The Sony Mavicas are good cameras and that floppy feature is extremely convenient. However, you are not the first person I have heard talk about this problem. You can get high resolution pictures but the problem is you can usually only store 1-3 on a floppy. Who can live with a single photo? No one - so most people set the resolution down a bit so they can fit more images on the disk. Since floppies store a relatively small amount of data, you trade the ability to hold high resolution photos for convenience.

The thing is, though, once you get beyond the surface level, you find that other options like CompactFlash and even Smartmedia are pretty darned convenient, too. If you use a laptop, you can get a high res digital camera the uses CompactFlash, buy a $30 PCMCIA adapter for the CompactFlash card, and you will be able to do essentially the same thing you do with a floppy - stick it in the slot and copy the photos to your hard drive. Only this time, you will be blown away with how fast the images transfer. Copying images off of a floppy is probably as slow as or slower than hooking your camera up to the computer via a serial connection. Either one takes a long time, comparatively.

CompactFlash is a lot more expensive you can get a 96MB card for about $250 to $300) but you can hold hundreds of high resolution images... Hundreds!

Okay, I hear what you're saying, you do not have a PCMCIA slot in your desktop computer at work. Well, they make USB and parallel card readers so cheap nowadays that they are practically giving them away.

If it is too late for you to make an exchange, don't sweat it. You may be able to get some of those new super floppies that hold over 100 MBs (instead of the usual 2). These cost more, of course, but would allow you to use the 640 x 480 setting on the Sony and still get a number of pictures. This is not really that high res but it is better that the lower 320 setting. Although I do not know of other brands out there with the floppy, you can get a higher end Mavica if you need to stick with the floppy disks.

But, then again, look at the iMacs - Apple doesn't even put floppy disk drives in them :)
