external flash for Nikon 5700

Can anyone recommend an external flash to be used with a Nikon 5700 camera? I read someone that the flash must be of Nikon brand or it will void all warranties and can cause the computer to malfunction.

If something goes wrong with the camera and you tell nikon that you used some other equipment brand, they'll use that as an excuse to void the warranty. Everybody does that, even with using different lens brands.
Sunpak, metz are two that come immediately to mind. A look to adorama.com or b&h.com will get you a list of others.

If a faulty speedlight causes damage, then yes the camera maker will refuse void the warranty. But they will not do so simply because you use someone else's speedlight or lens on the camera.

For example, if you use a 30 year old Vivitar flash with high trigger voltage that cooks the camera's electronics, then yes, that is not covered by the camera warranty. If you use a current model Vivitar and something non-flash related goes wrong with the camera, the warranty will be honored.

have something go wrong with the hot shoe that wasn't something the flash did to it, and tell nikon you used some other flash, and see if your warranty is still in effect.

  Per Nikon:
"Dear Jon, [we] make such a statement in our user guide:

"THE USE OF NON-NIKON ELECTRONIC ACCESSORIES COULD DAMAGE THE CAMERA AND MAY VOID YOUR NIKON WARRANTY. The use of third-party rechargeable Li-ion batteries not approved by Nikon could interfere with normal operation of the camera or result in the batteries overheating, igniting, rupturing, or leaking."

Keyword here is "may".

Our products are designed for use with our known acessories characteristics. You can use third party speedlight for example, if you take steps to protect the camera against overly high trigger voltages by using a third party reducer. We get quite a few camera in here with the speedlight controllers melted ( in some cases there is a hole in the PC board where the controller was before it was vaporized (studio strobes), which only happens when they get hit with 500v or more, that's an instant "no warranty repair".

Same thing with a/c adapters, the port on your model camera clearly says "8.4V" but we often get questions why a 6.5 volt adapter won't work (they will, for a little while, but the camera voltage regulator is now working so far outside it's design limit it fails dramatically. You'd be surprised how much smoke can come out of a camera. Some third party a/c adatpers lack overcurrent protection in some cases. Same thing with third party batteries. We actually have counterfeit batteries in circulation in the US, they say "Nikon" all over, but they lack the overcurrent protection system that keeps lithium batteries from bursting if they are shorted out.

Third party lenses have been known to have improper threading, but threading damage is never covered under warranty in any case, unless in a rare instance one of the lens adapter for the 5700 was mis-manufactured and our service can see it was actually our fault after examination of the adapter that damaged the camera threads. We had one single case of one of our 5700 lens adapters having defective threading. When the client sent the adapter, and service determined it was the fault, they replaced the front case under warranty.

The warranty is not "automatically voided" by using third party product, but if there is damage traceable to the use of such product, we have no obligation to provide warranty repairs.

When it comes to money and who's paying, what people say and what they do are two different things.
