How to Light Portraits of Dark Complected Subjects

I am by no means a professional, but I have taken some portraits of my kids that have met with local appreciation. My kids are fair skinned with sandy hair and blue eyes, so I have always simply used pre-sunset natural light. Some good friends have asked me to take a family portrait for them, but they have very dark skin, hair, and eyes. Are the lighting considerations different to get the best portrait?

I found this an interesting read:

I haven't ever tried the techniques, but they sound good, and since no one else offered an answer, I thought I'd suggest the article. Let me know what you find out... I also have a couple of dark-skinned friends who would like me to photograph them.
