Shooting people iwith flash in low light

I am looking for help with flash photography. I use a vivtar flash 2800, and when I take photo's of people in rooms, that are dark ( Like dance halls at weddings) the flesh tones get washed out. I tried useing the scale on the back of the flash and also useing the auto feature on the unit ( its not TTL). I really don't have time to take a flash meter readings in a fast moveing environment ( not that I have a flash meter). Any suggestions?

With big dark rooms, flashes on auto get fooled into trying to light the vast dark background area. So too much light gets flashed. TTL can be fooled by that too. So there's no fool proof way.
What can improve on good ones coming out is if you still want to use the flash on auto is to use it at auto for a 2.8 aperture. Many times this will keep the flash from going too far over because it's not required to flash for a small aperture.
Using the scale I've done many times with just estimating distance. If something is a little farther, such as 15ft instead of 10ft, I do a quick adjustment to the f-stop right before I take the picture. If something's real far away, I estimate the distance and if I feel I need to, go one level up on the flash power right before I take the picture.
You just pay attention to where you are in relation to what you're taking a picture of.
