Enlargements

I want to have a picture I recently took in Arizona with Fuji Reala 100 film enlarged to about 20x24. A&I is the lab I use, but the price is about $60, not including shipping. Does anyone know of a comparably excellent lab that has more reasonable prices for such enlargements? Thanks, Jordan.

Visit mpix.com they accept both digital and film orders. They are very inexpensive and print on professional kodak paper.

  Jordan,
Reala 100, 35mm format to 20x24? Thats a tall order for a 35mm negative. It must be outstanding in perfect focus, tight grain and great saturation. I would be concerned enlarging that much from a 35 neg. Probably will have some grain that may be very obvious.
Good Luck! Dave H.

  20x24 isn't a tall order for 35mm.
You could even take it to wolf. Their prices went up to around $40 I think, but their 20x30s do come out good.

Sorry Jordan, I will respect Greg's answer. I am a Fuji fan, just never had that experience with Reala. I'll read and remain silent. Good Luck.

Thanks all for responding and for your suggestions.

Brandi, I checked out Mpix, and their prices are very reasonable, but they said they only accept digital right now.

Dave, the picture is of the Grand Canyon and it does appear to be very sharp, but it is only a 4x6, so you may be right that such an enlargement might not work. I think I'll give a 10x15 a try and see if it's still sharp and pleasing enlarged, a 10x15 at A&I is only $10.50, so that isn't too bad, plus I can count on the quality of their work.

Greg, my local Ritz/Wolf doesn't seem to keep up their machine very well and printed fade lines on the prints and scratched my negatives.

Thanks again for helping me out,

Jordan

I get 20" x 30" all the time for my commercial clients from Reala 35mm film.
At Golden Color in Beverly Hills,CA for $20.00 plus $10? or $15? for Postage.
They also do 6 foot by 14 foot from 35mm film. These guys are pros, They know colors, contrasts etc. They don't use mini-lab machines. www.goldencolor.com
One time I sent 70 4x6's to make 70 8x12's, only one photo needed to corrected. He felt my exterior tungsten correction was far to white and not enough "natural" yellow. We compromised half-way and it was a better photo @ no charge.
I send them a 4x6 photo for sample proof. I've never had them make me a proof. But for your own curiosity, have them make you a 8x12 for your own proofing @ $3.00 + $10 postage.
You are showing the dramatics of the picture versus sharpness. If you really wanted sharpness I do the following...Tripod, Mirror Lock-up, Prime Lens, hang my bag on the tripod, Remote Switch, with negative film I add 1/2 to 1 exposure(this really brings out the color on Reala and a slite increase in contrast which will perceive a sharper image), and bracket? Not exposures, 3 focus points. I focus on the farthest object to mid way or near object.

Only my ideas

Hey Ken Thanks their prices are very reasonable... plus they're offering a free 20x30 to try them out. I think I'll give them a shot! Are they usually pretty speedy in doing the work?

Hey Jordan, No more than two weeks from the day you mail your sample. Mail is mail.

Right. So, you typically receive it in no more than two weeks from the time you send it. I was just curious because it said normal turn around 15 days. But now I see you can pay a little more for a faster turn around. Thanks again for your help, Ken.

  Jordan,
Mpix does accept film that is where I develop my filn. They develop then scan and put them online so you can choose what you want but they may not take negatives. I need to check into that, did you?

  Hi Brandi
I emailed them a while ago and asked them if I could send in negatives and they said they dont accept film orders at this time or something like that so probably they'll only scan them at the time of development. When they develop yours do they scan it at a high enough resolution to even make enlargements?
