Photography Question

digital pictures versus film

How do pictures from cameras like the Canon Eos d30 [3.1meg]stand up to pictures made from a Canon slr loaded with color negative film? What about the compact 8 megapixel cameras currently on the market?

The D30 is close (a matter for opinions) but the newer versions; D60 or 10D (or Rebel) with 6.3MP do and in my case gave plenty of new spirit in reviving my photography juices. I take thousands of pictures where I used to take just a few. After the initial costs, you only have the cost of time which I can usually find to give to my hobby. As an example; I just took photos of a charity event that lasts 4 week, 2 shows per week. Pictures were taken over a couple of rehearsals and 3 show nights. I ended up with between 1900 and 2000 6.3MP RAW images. I would never/could never have done that with film.

Where film still has a slight advantage is in dynamic range; the range between the lightest and darkest points of a photo that the camera can reproduce. 35mm offers a greater dynamic range but besides that 6.3MP rivals 35mm close enough that most people have gone over. The advantages to me far FAR outweigh any disadvantages.
