Photography Question

As to the Aspect Ratio of Digital Picture files

Snapfish.com, the online photo service, informs me that digital files do not have a true 4x6 aspect ratio, but rather have a 4x5.3 aspect ratio. For this reason, 4x6 prints from digital files are cropped on all four sides; personal experience bears this out. They offer a 4x5.3 print which is uncropped.

Are digital camera makers attempting to make a true 4x6 digital file? Are digital photo processors moving toward a 4x5.3 format standard, with corresponding archival sleeves and other accessories?

Intresting question (and I'll look for others input)...

My Digi Rebel shoots in the 4x6 format and have no problems ordering 4x6 (or identical ratio) prints straight out of the camera.

As far as I know, there is no move to change the format (and it's always been an issue).

Virtually all digital point & shoots, and "SLR-like" digitals such as the Powershot Pro1, have sensors in 3:4 aspect ratio. This is the same format as standard TV and computer monitors. A full frame print would enlarge to 4x5.33. To get a 4x6 print you have to enlarge to 4.5x6 and crop.

Digital SLR cameras, such as the Digital Rebel or Nikon D70, have sensors that duplicate the 2:3 aspect ratio of 35mm film, so 4x6 prints from them are full frame.

  John W. & Jon C.,

Thanks very much for your helpful info; this explanation reveals a fundamental issue with digital cameras other than the "Digital Rebel" and the "Nikon D70."

Buyers beware! If your digital camera doesn't have a sensor (CCD or CMOS) that duplicates the 2:3 aspect ratio of 35mm film, your 4x6 prints will be cropped! This means learning to frame your shots with extra space around all four sides of your subject.

This info should be given to consumers before they buy!
