Photography Question

Nancy Monge

Compact or SLR Digital Camera

I use Canon EOS Camera and already have few EF lenses with me. I have been into photography for a while now but only recently became more serious about it. I would like to upgrade to a digital camera, however, I am having difficulty deciding whether I should have the SLR Digital camera wherein I can use my current lenses or or have compact digital camera. By the way I am choosing between Canon 10D and Pro1. Please help.

Nancy: A full discussion of the issues would require a long magazine article. (I wrote two for eDIGITAL PHOTO magazine; July 04 issue. See http://www.edigitalphoto.com/cameras/0407edp_digitalslr/ and http://www.edigitalphoto.com/cameras/0407edp_amazing8s/ )

Bottom Line: Since you already have lenses and SLR experience, get the EOS Digital Rebel.

The image quality will be higher because this 6 megapixel camera produces cleaner files than the 8 MP cameras. Hence, they can be enlarged to a much greater extent in computer, without much loss of image quality.

And images made at ISO 400 exhibit much less digital noise.

The 10D has some extra features, but would you really need them?

Excerpt from my Digital Rebel review in PHOTO LIFE magazine:

"Based on the highly-rated EOS 10D, the D Rebel employs a similar 6.5 megapixel CMOS sensor and DIGIC processor to generate nearly identical image quality. Admittedly, there are some tradeoffs for the dramatically reduced price. These include more extensive use of polycarbonate (versus magnesium alloy) components, the omission of custom functions and certain control features, slightly slower shooting speed (2.5 versus 3 fps) and reduced burst depth allowing for 4 versus 9 frames in a sequence. Adequately rugged for the hobbyist, the D Rebel retains the most important 10D features with extensive automation for simplicity plus extensive manual control over numerous conventional and digital aspects."

Cheers! Peter Burian
