Tri-X Pushing Dev. Only

I use Tri-X for street and portrait work. A friend says he pushes it to 800 all the time, and he says he gets a thicker negative that way, i.e. more contrast. But I thought that would create a thinner negative - unless he is only talking about developing longer as opposed to rating the film at 800 when he shoots.
Thank you.

If your friend is truly 'pushing' then he is underexposing AND overdeveloping to compensate. That will not give thicker negs, but will increase contrast noticeably (and increase grain slightly). You are correct that if he were merely rating the film at EI 800 instead of EI 400 with no change in development then he would get a thinner neg.
BTW, I push Tri-X and HP-5 to EI 2500 fairly routinely with Edwal FG7 and sodium sulphite. Works great. Ian
