coloring photos

Hello I was wondering if anyone has some tips on coloring photos with pencil and/or clay markers. What is best and how is the best way to do it?

When I was taking a photography class at a local University, we did handcoloring of photos. We printed them on a fiber based paper, then colored them w/ Marshall Brand pencils...first prepping the paper with (now I can't think of what it was) a liquid...which made it possible to rub the color in beautifully! Fiber paper is expensive...at least to have it printed at my local lab so I've not been able to do it. You are supposed to be able to spray your matte finish photo with a spray (ie: Krylon Matte Spray) and then use pencils but I've never been very successful at doing this. I'll be very interested to see other posts as I would love to do this too....most of my portraits of children are done in B&W Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
