Canon vs. Nikon vs. Olympus

First of all, I want to thank everyone who responded to my "Buying digital and going nuts" post. The 15 responses were very helpful!

I have decided that, for now, an inexpensive digital camera will do for the upcoming birth of my first child. I think in another year I'll spurge for the digital SLR. So I've researched a bunch of cameras and I'm considering the following:

Canon A75
Canon A80
Nikon Coolpix 4300
Olympus C-740

They are all in the $200-$300 range and appear to have many features in common. Any thoughts on these 4 cameras???

Thanks again!
Seth

Actually I prefer a Zeiss Ikon Contax (that ought to push some of the Leica-philes' hot buttons). ;-)

More Seriously:
Camera choice is a very personal one. There are a number of factors, many of which you are likely considering with the technical specifications regarding various features and capabilities. Oft overlooked are the ergonomic aspects of the camera in *your* hands (versus in my hands or someone elses) and what feels balanced and natural to *you* regarding controls, their function and their placement. If you haven't actually handled any of these, I suggest doing so. Didn't realize how important this was until I began holding a camera for 8-10 hours with little respite during professional shoots. It can make the difference between having a technically very capable camera that feels cumbersome in use . . . and one that feels naturally as if it's an extension of your hand, eye and brain . . . and that does indirectly affect the photographs.
