Shooting Side lit subjects

For shooting subjects or scenes that are side-lit, do you deliberately underexpose one stop, to enhance the contrast between shadoes and light?

I remember reading once that you should... "Meter for the highlights, and let the shadows fall where they may."
Use this guideline as a starting point and bracket in 1/2 stops both ways to see which effect you like best.
