Does your scanner give you the option to select the type of original document you have? ie you should be able to select "descreen" which should be used when scanning a document that has been printed using the 'offset printing' process (by laying down a series of fine, CMYK dots at an oblique angle). Your magazines etc have been offset printed. If you choose to photograph the document instead of scanning it, the camera won't be able to detect the fine, oblique dots, unless perhaps you used a macro lens and the lens could visibly see the dots on a document that was printed with low resolution dots, say less than 60dpi.
