using a laptop for digital manipulation

I am considering purchasing a laptop for digital photo manipulation. Does a laptop have the capability to handle photo software and photos? If so, any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

If you got the budget, any of the Macintosh Powerbooks and i-Books will suffice. I no longer use my desktop that much as the Mac laptops are powerful enough. I teach at an arts school - most of the work done in our department (photography, film, video etc.) are done on Macs and increasingly in laptops.

laptop's are quite powerfull to do this stuff but I have noticed when designing and manipulating high res pictures on photoshop my IBM P4 slows down on me. But if you are just doing single image manipulations in something like photoshop then any P4 with a good VGA card and atleast 256 mb ram should be great for this.

You can definately get a lap top to run image editing, desktop publishing and other graphic software. Just make sure the specs are suitable for what you need. I personally would lean (heavily) toward a Mac Powerbook, otherwise I would consider a Dell. I have read god things about Dell PC's but am a Mac guy and do not follow PC's.

I would recomend sticking with a CRT monitor versus a LCD If you are going to be doing a lot of heavy Photoshop work. It is anoying to me when I look at the screen at a different angle all the tones shift. You can get a good flat screen CRT monitor for under $200.00 and hook a lap top up to it when you are home.
