EF is Canon's designation for its lenses for the EOS af SLR cameras. Other makers such as Sigma, Tokina, Tamron make lenses for these cameras. They don't necessarily call the mount "EF" but instead call it Canon AF. These lenses generally will work fine on the D60, though if you are buying used you may occasionally come across an older lens that doesn't quite work properly with a newer EOS body (locks up the mirror, battery life symbol flashes are typical symptoms). This is because the EF mount electronics are backward-engineered by the third-party makers instead of paying Canon a license for the full code, and they sometimes didn't get it quite right. If you send the lens to the maker for service they will upgrade the electronics to make it work. For example, see Sigma's statement on this at http://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/pages/faqsb.htm#22

Note that there is a new EF-S lens (EF-S 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 USM) that is NOT compatible with the D60, or any other EOS camera except the Digital Rebel (aka 300D).

Oops, minor correction: The EF-S lens is not a "USM" lens.
