Interior lighting problems

Hi all,
I am trying to shoot interiors without flash, using a combination of natural light augmented with bedside lamps or ceiling lights...my problems are:
I can get wonderful exposure for the room, but the light from the bed side lamps are too bright and spoil the shot.
I am using a Canon 300D SLR, no matter what I set the aperture to nothing seems to work. Flash is fine but kills the warmth of the natural light.
A photographer friend says that he takes several low wattage bulbs with him...is this the only way.
Thanks
Dave
