Right Lens for My Kind of Photography?

I have an EOS300 and 28-90mm lens that came with camera when I bought it. I like my pics right now and I’d like to upgrade my lens to better improve my pictures. Now my question is would a 28-135mm IS USM be a wise choice for me? Especially if I’m mostly taking pics of my wife, kids and Landmarks when I’m traveling (Buildings). Is there a big difference between the 2 lenses? I read many reviews about this lens and as it may sound stupid that there is no lens for all I want a lens on my camera all the time since I want to carry only one or maybe 2 when I travel. My budget is around 400 or less. I’m a novice to photography and any advice is appreciated.

As a novice photographer as well, I can understand the desire to want to upgrade a lens; however, you should consider whether YOU fell the lens is right for your needs. To me, the only major change will be that you will get Image Stabilization with the new lens. That will allow you to handhold the camera at shutter speeds slower than you may be doing now.

Is that worth buying the lens? Ask yourself if your current images are sharp enough for your needs? Over the last few trips, have you wished you had image stabilization or a different lens?

Personally,I don't think there would be that great a leap from the 28-90 to the 28-135 to warrant a price. I think the money could be better spent on other purchases.

Of course, you didn't mention whether you had one or not ... but a good tripod would be a a better purchase. Or perhaps saving up the money and betting something like a 75-300 Telephoto or a wide angle to cover a range that you don't currently cover with your 28-90.

Again this is just my opinion and mileage could vary :)

Tanks Laljit for you fast response. I only have the 28-90 lens. In fact you came right to the point where my confusion is. Usually I take my pics for my wife at Shutter speed of 30 or 60 and an aperture 5.6 and an F.length of 85 and my children at 250 S.speed and above. Some photos came back great and some disappointing and very blurry. I like them to be sharp. I know IS does not replace a tripod according to the reviews in this sight but will it improve the quality when handhold the camera. I don’t use a tripod a lot. Also you mentioned another purchase would be wise so I’m thinking 75-300mm IS USM. But you know there are times where you have to take the picture for children and tripod is not possible to use to catch the moment without them knowing you are there. So, I’m thinking about the lens you suggested or if you have anymore inputs will highly be appreciated.

Given your subject matter (which I should have paid more attention to ... sorry), you are right a tripod would be somewhat encumbering. IS capabilities can make up for that. Personally, I would go for the 75-300 IS USM as it would expand the photographic possibilities.

Alternately sell the 28-90 on Ebay or something and then pick up a new IS 28-135 lens. I don't think, though, that you will need both lenses in that range.

Finally, (and this doesn't directly address your question) consider using fast film as well in order to be able to increase your shutter speed. That should help with minimizing blur. I like to use Fuji Provia 400, but any 400 speed film would be useful.
