TLR's

I bought a used Mamiya C3 from eBay to start fooling around with medium format. The first set of shots that I took were completely underexposed, but that was my fault. The next two sets I took were completely out of focus. When I looked into the ground glass- especially on the outdoor shots the focus was tack sharp!! Here is the strange thing: on the bottom of the outdoor pictures the very bottom of the picture (which would have been the ground closest to me) there are some leaves that are in focus. I take my shots to a prolab that have always done great 35mm work for me, but he doesn't know much about TLR's and neither do I. The groundglass appears easy and bright to focus and the screen is clear, not matte. When I looked into the focusing screen I could even see the dogs whiskers. Why would the bottom edge of the shot be in focus but nothing else? Maybe I don't understand the basics of how a TLR really works, but does it sound like the entire camera may have a focusing problem or do you think it might be a lens problem?

Thanks,
Sarah M.

I've got a C3 too and have never had any problems getting razor sharp pictures out of it. It unfortunately sounds like something must be out of alignment with your camera. The bellows must have been wound out too far from you if the closest part of the foreground was in focus but nothing else. I would suggest that the ground glass screen is causing the problem. Although maybe the little adjuster screws on the front of the body, which can be seen when the lens is removed are not set correctly.

The thing to do would be to try taking some photos with another lens and if you still get the same problem then it looks like the camera body is at fault.

The glass screen in the later cameras was interchangable but not in the C3.
